Full circle: From raw material to finished pump

After completing the fourth semester of his marine engineering degree, with a specialization in maritime technology, Julius joined IRON Pump full-time as a test operator.

Before joining IRON Pump, Julius worked with tank systems and fuel pumps. This hands-on experience and technical training made joining the company a natural next step.

At IRON Pump, the entire production process happens in-house, from raw material to final performance testing. Raw materials are cut and machined; components are pressure-tested and assembled, and everything is tested before delivery. For Julius, having the full production chain in one place is one of the most important parts of his job.

“In my department, we handle the final technical step once the pump is fully assembled and ready for testing. All parts have already been made, pressure-tested, and assembled before they reach us. We run the pump, check its performance, and make sure it meets all specifications. If something is off, we will catch it here. Seeing the pump go from raw material to finished product gives me a broad understanding of the whole process. It offers a different level of insight,” Julius says.

Testing ensures each pump operates at it’s designated duty point and meets all required standards before it leaves the facility. For larger pumps, third-party classification societies are often involved.

Beyond the technical tasks, Julius highlights collaboration in the company.

It is easy to ask for help, even from other departments. We work closely with engineers, workshop managers, and experienced assemblers. Many of my colleagues have been here for years and know the products inside out,” Julius says.

This openness and transparency help build strong teamwork and encourages sharing knowledge. Having both experienced colleagues and newer employees creates an environment where practical skills and technical knowledge support each other.

For Julius, the most rewarding part of his job is witnessing progress. When the workshop fills up wooden crates of completed orders, it shows that everyone’s work has come together.

“You can very clearly see how far the process has come. When the finished pumps are packed and ready to ship, you know you were part of the final step, and that’s always a proud moment for me,” he says.

At IRON Pump, Julius’ role is the final phase of production, where engineering, machining, assembly, and quality control all come together. A job that calls for technical knowledge, practical judgment, and close teamwork across the company.

When a pump reaches us in my department, it is fully assembled. Our job is to make sure that everything works as it should before it leaves the factory. This is where the process ends,Julius Levin Winther, Test operator at IRON Pump.
